William Schallert

Actor

Born - 6 July 1922, Los Angels, California, USA
Died - 8 May 2016

Friendly-looking, twinkling-eyed American character player with brushed-across dark hair and smile that could be wide or cynical - a shoo-in over several decades for scientists, judges and fathers of wayward teenage girls, following an early career in often harassed roles. The son of a drama editor and a film critic, he began his acting days with a small theatre group and quickly moved into films in his mid-twenties. But throughout his long career - he was acting into his nineties - he remained one of those faces to which it was hard to add a name. Dozens of film appearances included those in Doctor Jim (1947), Mighty Joe Young (1949), Perfect Strangers (1950), The People Against O'Hara (1951), Singin' in the Rain (one of 14 appearances he made in 1952 alone), The Jazz Singer (1953), Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954), Top of the World (1955), Friendly Persuasion (1956), The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), Cry Terror! (1958), Some Came Running (1958), Pillow Talk (1959), The Gallant Hours (1960), Lonely Are the Brave (1962), Hour of the Gun (1967), Speedway (1968), Sam Whiskey (1969), The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1970), Charley Varrick (1973), The Jerk (1979), Twilight Zone the Movie (1983), Gremlins (1984), InnerSpace (1987), Beethoven's 2nd (1993), Matinee (1993), Still Rockin' in Brooklyn Heights (1999) and Sweetzer (2007), his last, plus scores of TV appearances. He was married for 64 years to actress Lia Waggner and they had four sons: she died last year.
