Born - 17 September 1930, Vinton, Virginia, USA
Died - 2 August 2016

Bulky, hugely-headed, balding, cigar-puffing American character star, furiously busy in the 1970s and 1980s, but probably now best remembered for a later assignment, the title role in The Big Lebowski (1998). On TV from the late 1950s, it would be another decade before he began to emerge as a figure cinemagoers would instantly recognise: All the Way Home (1963), A Lovely Way to Go (1968), WUSA (1970), Rio Lobo (1970), Something Big (1971), Bad Company (1972), Blazing Saddles (1974), McQ (1974), Breakheart Pass (1975), Capricorn One (1977), Zero to Sixty (1978), Gorp (1980), Go for It (1983), the title role in Santa Claus (1985), Frantic (1987), Life With Mikey (1993), Joe's Apartment (1996), G-Men from Hell (2000), The Producers (2005), Postal (2007) and Locker 13 (2014), his last. He died from kidney and lung disease.
