Om Puri

Actor

Born - 18 November 1950, Ambala, Punjab, India
Died - 6 January 2017

Solidly-built Indian actor with distinctive pockmarked face, bulbous nose and deep-set eyes, a familiar figure on both western and Indian screens across almost 300 films. Smiles were few in the Puri CV after his movie debut in Kalla Kalla Bachitko (1975) straight from drama and film schools. Often to be seen in angry roles that stayed in the memory, he moved on to the international scene after his performances in Gandhi (1981) and the cult UK TV series The Jewel in the Crown. Scores of subsequent appearances include those in Mirch Masala/Spices (1985), Genesis (1986), Sam & Me (1988), City of Joy (1991), The Burning Season (1993), In Custody (1993), Patang/The Kite (1994), Target (1995), The Ghost and the Darkness (1996), My Son the Fanatic (1997), the chip-shop owner in East is East (1999), The Parole Officer (2001), Code 46 (2003), The Hangman (2005), Charlie Wilson's War (2007), Life Goes On (2009), West is West (2010), OMG (2012), The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014), Mirzya (2016) and Viceroy's House (2016), his last. Puri, who had eight brothers and sisters who all died in infancy, died from a heart attack.
