Beefy, frequently scowling American character actor, best remembered as the apoplectic Sheriff Pepper in two James Bond movies of the 1970s. Born George Clifton James, he was a much-decorated WW2 soldier who turned to acting, on stage until the mid 1950s, then films: The Strange One (1957), The Last Mile (1959), Something Wild (1961), The Grip of Fear (1962), Invitation to a Gunfighter (1964), The Chase (1966), Cool Hand Luke (1967), Will Penny (1967), The Reivers (1969), ...tick...tick...tick (1970), Precinct 45 - Los Angeles Police (1972), Live and Let Die (1973), The Last Detail (1973), The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), Rancho Deluxe (1975), Silver Streak (1976), The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977), CaboBlanco (1980), Superman II (1980), Talk to Me (1983), Stiffs (1985), The Untouchables (1987), Eight Men Out (1988), She-Devil (1989), The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Lone Star (1996), Sunshine State (2002) and Raising Flagg (2006), his last. He died from diabetes complications. His (second) wife Laurie died in 2015 after 61 years of marriage. They had five children.
