Freddie Jones

Actor

Born - 12 September 1927, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England
Died - 9 July 2019

Tall, moon-faced, large-headed, crafty-looking English character star, with rolling eyes and wild, light-brown, disappearing hair. Began life as a laboratory technician, but a belated drama scholarship put him on the path to an acting career. He entered films in his late thirties and quickly cornered the market in twitching, unreliable eccentrics, and proved the best 'monster' since Boris Karloff, in Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969). After a debut in The Marat/Sade (1966), he stole scenes in many of his subsequent films: Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), The Bliss of Mrs Blossom (1968), Assault (1970), Kidnapped (1971), Sitting Target (1972), The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973), Juggernaut (1974), Never Too Young to Rock (1975), Zulu Dawn (1979), The Elephant Man (1980), Firefox (1982), Krull (1983), Firestarter (1984), Young Sherlock Holmes (1985), Comrades (1986), Consuming Passions (1988), Wild at Heart (1990), The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1993), Cold Comfort Farm (1995), What Rats Won't Do (1998), The Count of Monte Cristo (2002), Ladies in Lavender (2004), Caught in the Act (2008), Come on Eileen (2010) and By Our Selves (2015), his last. He died 'after a short illness'. The actor Toby Jones and director Rupert Jones are two of his three sons. He married actress Jennie Heslewood, who survives him.
