Long-headed, quite tall French actor, kindly looking in a vaguely condescending way, with dark curly hair disappearing over a high forehead. Born Jacques Michel Piccoli to a family of Italian musicians, he was on stage towards the end of World War Two. In films he began in supporting roles, progressing to prominence in movies by such directors as Luis Bunuel, Claude Chabrol and Louis Malle, winning some central roles as he moved into his forties, and proving an actor of great versatility. More than 200 film appearances included those in Sortileges (1944), Le Point du Jour (1948), Love and the Frenchwoman (1952), French Can Can (1955), The Foxiest Girl in Paris (1957), The Witches of Salem (1957), The Virgins of Rome (1960), Le Doulos/Finger Man (1962), Contempt/Le Mepris (1963), Diary of a Chambermaid (1963), Masquerade (1964), The Sleeping Car Murders (1965), Lady L (1965), The Young Girls of Rochefort (1966), Belle de Jour (1967), Topaz (1969), Ten Days' Wonder (1971), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), The Phantom of Liberty (1974), Mado (1976), The Girl in Blue Velvet (1978), Atlantic City USA (1979), Bolero (1981), Viva La Vie (1984), Bad Blood (1986), The Chinese Connection (1988), Milou in May (1989), La Reine Margot (1993), Tykho Moon (1996), Paris - Timbuktu (1999), La Petite Lili (2003), Magic Mirror (2005), Belle Toujours (2006), Sous les Toits de Paris (2007), Restless (2009), Holy Motors (2012), The Taste of Myrtles (2014), his last, and many more.
