Bespectacled, short but solidly-built, prolific English screenwriter who won an Oscar for The Pianist and wrote a fistful of other high profile films. Born Ronald Horwitz, he began his career by joining Sir Donald Wolfit's theatrical company in 1953 and was the actor's dresser for five years before embarking on a writing career. Screenplays included those for Private Potter (1962), A High Wind in Jamaica (1965), Drop Dead, Darling (1966), Diamonds for Breakfast (1968), Eyewitness/Sudden Terror (1970), One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch (1971), Operation Daybreak (1975), The Dresser (1983), The Doctor and the Devils (1985), A Fine Romance (1992), The Browning Version (1994), Cry, the Beloved Country (1995), The Pianist (2002), Being Julia (2004), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), Australia (2008) and Quartet (2012), his last. His wife Natasha died in 2013 after 54 years of marriage.
