Walter Bernstein

Screenwriter

Born - 20 August 1919, New York City, USA
Died - 23 January 2021

Balding, bespectacled, not-too-tall American screenwriter. After penning Kiss the Blood Off My Hands in 1948, he was blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee and was only able to work under pseudonyms for the next 10 years. Resuming a career under his real name, he wrote screenplays for That Kind of Woman (1959), Heller in Pink Tights (1960), Paris Blues (1961), Fail Safe (1964), The Molly Maguires (1969), The Front (1976), Semi-Tough (1977), Yanks (1978), Little Miss Marker (1980), The House in Carroll Street (1987) and The Couch Trip 1988), as well as working uncredited on the scripts for The Magnificent Seven (1960) and The Train (1964). Actress Judith Braun was the third of his four wives. Oscar-nominated for The Front, he died from pneumonia.
