Hal Holbrook

Actor

Born - 17 February 1925, Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Died - 23 January 2021

Increasingly scrunch-faced American star character actor with a mop of dark (later grey) hair. A man of the stage for the first 20 years of his career, he possessed special, wistful qualities and one of the most attractive speaking voices since Henry Fonda. He made no films until his forties, but soon became a regular near the top of the cast, his performances always interesting and incisive. He also toured his one-man show as Mark Twain and was a frequent TV guest star, often as government officials or caring men of conscience. Many films include The Group (1966), Wild in the Streets (1968), The Great White Hope (1970), They Only Kill Their Masters (1972), Magnum Force (1973), All the President's Men (1976), Capricorn One (1977), Julia (1977), The Fog (1979), Creepshow (1982), The Star Chamber (1983), Wall Street (1987), Fletch Lives (1989), The Firm (1993), Acts of Love (1995), Operation Delta Force (1997), Judas Kiss (1998), The Bachelor (1999), The Majestic (2001), Shade (2003), Oscar-nominated for Into the Wild (2007), That Evening Sun (2009), Water for Elephants (2011), Lincoln (2012), Savannah (2013) and Blackway (2015), his last. His third wife, actress Dixie Carter, died in 2010.
