Bearded, oval-faced, ruddy-cheeked English costume designer, the winner of three Academy Awards and cousin of fellow costume designer Sandy Powell. His first on-screen credit came with a TV production of The Comedy of Errors in 1964, but he was soon in demand for film work: The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1969), A Town Called Bastard (1971), Travels With My Aunt (1972, first Oscar), Papillon (1973), That Lucky Touch (1975), Buffalo Bill and the Indians (1976), Death on the Nile (1978, second Oscar), Tess (1979, third Oscar), Evil Under the Sun (1982), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Pirates (1986), Frantic (1988), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Hook (1991), 101 Dalmatians (1996), The Avengers (1998), 102 Dalmatians (2000, and the last of his six Oscar nominations) and Miss Potter (2006), his final credit.
