Round-raced, pleasantly portly, versatile American star character actor with receding brown wavy hair, often in sweaty roles. He gained wide-ranging theatrical experience (he played Big Daddy in a production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at 21) before heading for Hollywood in his mid thirties and landing a good variety of parts following his major-role debut in Deliverance (1972). This plumper version of Dick Powell was an Oscar nominee for Network (1976) and unlucky not win a second nomination for his engaging performance as a refugee singer in Hear My Song (1991).
