Ed Asner

Actor

Born - 15 November 1929, Kansas City, Missouri, USA
Died - 29 August 2021

Bluff, burly, balding, beetle-browed American character star with large, round face and rough tones. Cast as tough characters in films after long theatrical training, he's nonetheless best recalled for his TV work as newspaper editor Lou Grant, itself a spin-off from the character he had created in The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Later on, his militancy as president of the Screen Actors' Guild led indirectly to the series being cancelled, and he briefly struggled for work before re-emerging, looking much older, in more sympathetic supporting roles. Born Yitzhak Edward Asner, his credits include The New Girl (1960), Kid Galahad (1962), The Satan Bug (1964), The Slender Thread (1965), El Dorado (1966), Gunn (1967), Change of Habit (1969), They Call Me MISTER Tibbs! (1970), Skin Game (1971), The Wrestler (1974), Gus (1976), Fort Apache the Bronx (1981), Daniel (1983), The Christmas Star (1986), JFK (1991), Goldilocks and the Three Bears (1995), Hard Rain (1997), The Bachelor (1999), Above Suspicion (2000), Island Prey (2001), Elf (2003), The Heart Specialist (2006), Gigantic (2008), a voice in Up (2009), Not Another B Movie (2010), Absolute Killers (2011), Elephant Sighs (2012), The Games Maker (2014), Citizens United (2015), Joe's War (2017), Angels on Tap (2018), Faith, Hope & Love (2109), Tiger Within (2020), Senior Entourage (2021), A Fargo Christmas Story (2022), his last, and many more films and TV movies, close to 300 in all. Survived by second wife Cindy and three children from an earlier marriage.
