Hardy Kruger

Actor

Born - 12 April 1928, Berlin, Germany
Died - 19 January 2022

Good-looking, blond-haired, solidly-built, very blue-eyed German actor with prominent lips. Enforcedly inducted into the Hitler Youth, then the Army and SS, he hated Nazism and later lectured on the folly of racism and anti-semitism. Escaping three times from the Allies after capture in 1945, he mirrored the exploits of the flyer he was later to play in the 1957 film The One That Got Away. Born Franz Eberhard Kruger, he made his film debut as a teenager in Young Eagles (1944). Returning to German films from 1949, he began to attract international attention: Alibi (1955), Confess Dr Corda (1958), Bachelor of Hearts (1958), Blind Date (1959), Taxi for Tobruk (1960), Hatari! (1961), Sundays and Cybele (1962), Le Gros Coup (1964), The Flight of the Phoenix (1965), The Defector (1966), Battle for Neretva (1967), The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1968), The Red Tent (1969), Night Hair Child (1971), The Execution (1972), Paper Tiger (1974), Barry Lyndon (1975), Montana Trap (1976), A Bridge Too Far (1977), The Wild Geese (1978), The Man With the Deadly Lens/Wrong is Right (1982) and The Inside Man (1984), his last. He and his third wife Anita later ran a safari lodge in Kenya.
