Stocky, square-jawed stand-up comic with distinctive New York accent, often delivered from the side of his mouth. From the late 1950s, he took time off from his night-club work to become a regular film and TV performer in comic cameos: The Prince Who Was a Thief (1951), Stalag 17 (1953), Gun Fever (1958), Who Was That Lady? (1959), 40 Pounds of Trouble (1962), Captain Newman MD (1963), Sex and the Single Girl (1964), The Great Race (1965), A Very Special Favor (1965), The Great Bank Robbery (1968), The Monitors (1969), Scooby-Doo Meets Batman (1972), Airport 1975 (1974), The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington (1977), S.O.B. (1981), Sweet Sixteen (1983), A Fine Mess (1986), I Don't Buy Kisses Anymore (1992), The Silence of the Hams (1994), Funny Valentine (2004) and Bittersweet Place (2005), his last. His wife Norma died in 2003.
