Alain Tanner

Director

Born - 6 December 1929, Geneva, Switzerland
Died - 11 September 2022

Shaggy Swiss director, a forerunner of the Franco-Swiss New Wave in the 1960s which, as well as being often politically motivated, broke new boundaries in the cinema in many ways. Remaining popular with audiences for longer than his French contemporary Jean-Luc Godard, who was to die two days later Tanner began making documentary shorts in his late twenties, his feature debut not coming until Charles, Dead or Alive in 1969. After that, he soon hit his stride: The Salamander (1971), Return from Africa (1973), The Middle of the World (1974), Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000 (1976), Messidor (1979), Light Years Away (1981), In the White City (1983), No Man's Land (1985), La Vallee Fantome (1987), The Woman from Rose Hill (1989), The Man Who Lost His Shadow (1991), The Diary of Lady M (1993), Fourbi (1996), Requiem (1998), Jonah and Lila, Till Tomorrow (1999), Fleurs de Sang/Flowers of Blood (2002) and Paul s'en Va (2004), his last. His love life was considerably less complex than Godard's, Janine, his wife of 58 years, surviving him.
