Light-haired, horsey, rasp-voiced character actress noted for her fruity sense of humour and a popular raconteur with a colourful background., Born Edna Gorring, she was in pre-war rep before joining ENSA in World War Two as a chorus girl, later dancing in stripper Phyllis Dixey's famous wartime stage show before marrying actor/director Alexander Doré; they ran their own stage company in Wales for several years. Later she became a stalwart of the National Theatre. Films only here and there in her busy life, though latterly a Mike Leigh irregular: More Deadly Than the Male (1958), Jungle Street (1960), The Wind of Change (1961), then masses of TV and theatre before High Hopes (1988), Nil by Mouth (1997), Les Miserables (1998), Tube Tales (1999), Goodbye Charlie Bright (2001), All or Nothing (2002), That Time of Year (2004), 44 Inch Chest (2009) and Another Year (2010), her last. She died from emphysema. Her husband died in 2002.
