Long (6ft 6in), lithe, shaven-headed, deep-voiced black actor, dancer and choreographer, who was already directing a dance company in his late teens. He made his acting debut as a voodoo dancer in Carib Gold (1957) and there were a few more appearances before the camera: Porgy and Bess (1958), Doctor Dolittle (1967), Krakatoa: East of Java (1969), Live and Let Die (1973, as pop-eyed Baron Samedi), The Noah (1975), The Scarlet Buccaneer (1976), Annie (1982), Ghost of a Chance (1987), Boomerang (1992), Chance or Coincidence (1998), Goosed (1999), the narrator in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and the short Butterfield (2008), his last. Married to actress Carmen De Lavallade since 1955, he died from pneumonia complications.
