Thickly fair-haired, youthfully good-looking American actor, best remembered as James Dean's brother in East of Eden (1954), his first film role. Much on TV, his movie profile was never quite as high again, although he also made The Sea Chase (1955), I Died a Thousand Times (1955), All the Young Men (1960), The Cabinet of Caligari (1962), Cool Hand Luke (1967), Kelly's Heroes (1970), Hot Stuff (1979), Battle Beyond the Stars (1980), Death Hunt (1980) and Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983). Much later, he played a couple of elderly cameos in Between the Sheets (2003) and Ninja Cheerleaders (2008), his last. Father of actresses Dominique Davalos and Elyssa Davalos and grandfather of actress Alexa Davalos.
