Distinguished photographer and cinematographer working in British films. A master of black and white, he also did striking work in controlled colour schemes, notably in Get Carter (1971). His prodigious output, begun with short subjects during World War Two, included No Resting Place (1951), The Oracle (1953), The Bespoke Overcoat (1955), Cat and Mouse (1958), The Boy Who Loved Horses (1961), Sands of Beersheba (1964), Ulysses (1967), Entertaining Mr Sloane (1970), Theatre of Blood (1973), Falling Love Again (1980), The Young Visiters (1984) and Riders to the Sea (1987), his last. The cinematographer Peter Suschitzky is his son.
