Tall, sleek, very dark-haired American star, a lithe hero of 1950s' action films who became best remembered for his leading role in more than 100 episodes of the TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, as well as segments of the series Five Fingers, some of which were shown as films in the UK. Born Ara Heditsian of Armenian heritage, but changed to Albert David Hedison, he had begun his career as Al Hedison, making his debut as such in The Enemy Below (1957). He was also prominent in The Fly (1958), Son of Robin Hood (1958), The Lost World (1960) and Marines, Let's Go (1961), before TV began to dominate his output from the early 1960s. Further isolated film appearances did come in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), Kemek (1970), Live and Let Die (1973, as Felix Leiter), North Sea Hijack (1979), The Naked Face (1984), Smart Alec (1986), Licence to Kill (1989, again as Leiter), Mach 2 (2000), Spectres (2004), The Reality Trap (2005), The Green Girl (2014) and Confessions of a Teenage Jesus Jerk (2017), his last. His wife of nearly 50 years, Bridget, died three years ago.
