Died - 4 October 2019

Narrow-faced beauty with a distinctive singing style who later shone as an actress and became the first Afro-American woman to have her own TV series, with Julia, which ran from 1968 to 1971. Much earlier, she had made her movie debut as a teenager, in Carmen Jones (1954). Born Carol Diann Johnson, her later film credits include Porgy and Bess (1959), Goodbye Again/Aimee-vous Brahms? (1961), Paris Blues (1961), Hurry Sundown (1967), The Split (1968), Claudine (1974), I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1979), Mo' Better Blues (1990), The Five Heartbeats (1991, Eve's Bayou (1997), Peeples (2013) and The Masked Saint (2016), her last, as well as many TV movies. Nominated for an Oscar in Claudine, and the winner of a Tony for the stage musical No Strings, she was at one time engaged to Sidney Poitier, and later married and divorced four times, the first to producer Monte Roy and the last to singer/actor Vic Damone. She died from cancer.
