Gene Reynolds

Producer/actor

Born - 4 April 1923, Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Died - 3 February 2020

Light-haired, fresh-faced boy actor who later became the influential producer of such landmark TV series as M*A*S*H and Lou Grant. Born Eugene Reynolds Blumenthal, his perky personality soon came to the attention of Hollywood producers once his family moved to Los Angeles, and he was swiftly in demand: Babes in Toyland (1934), Transient Lady (1935), Thank You, Jeeves! (1936), Madame X (1937), Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938), Boys Town (1938), They Shall Have Music (1939), Bad Little Angel (1939), The Mortal Storm (1940), Santa Fe Trail (1940), Andy Hardy's Private Secretary (1941), The Penalty (1941), The Tuttles of Tahiti (1942), Eagle Squadron (1942). After WW2 service with the US Navy, he tried to rebuild his film career as a young adult actor: Jungle Patrol (1948), The Big Cat (1949), Slattery's Hurricane (1949), Conflict (1951), 99 River Street (1953), Down Three Dark Streets (1954), The Country Girl (1954), Tiger in the Sky (1955) and Diane (1956). After three more years acting in TV series, he moved behind the camera, eventually becoming a powerful TV executive producer, a role he pursued until semi-retirement in 1991. He married actresses Bonnie Jones and (for more than 20 years until his death) Ann Sweeny, both of whom survive him.
