An Australian Aboriginal actor and dance teacher, the enigmatic (and latterly spectacularly hirsute) player had no formal education, and was teaching dance when selected by director Nicolas Roeg for his debut role in Walkabout (1971). Settling into acting as a career, he was further seen in Solomon (1973), Mad Dog Morgan (1976), Storm Boy (1976), The Last Wave (1977), The Right Stuff (1983), Crocodile Dundee (1986), Dark Age (1987), Until the End of the World (1991), Dead Heart (1996), Serenades (2000), Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002), the title role in The Tracker (2002), The Proposition (2004), Ten Canoes (2006), Australia (2008), Satellite Boy (2011), Charlie's Country (2013), Crazy Days at the Old Brumby Moon (2016), Cargo (2017) and a remake of Storm Boy (2019), his last. Born David Gulpilil Dalaithngu, he died from lung cancer. He had four children.
