Carol Raye

Born - 17 January 1923, Rotherhithe, London, England
Died - 19 June 2022

Talented blonde entertainer who shone in British musicals of the 1940s, but chose to emigrate to Australia at 30. A light-footed, elfin figure, she was born Kathleen Corkrey, and her early career bears comparison with that of Jessie Matthews - extending to her playing Matthews' star-making role of Susie Dean, in a TV version of The Good Companions in 1949. Beginning her career as a dancer at 16, she remained underused by the British cinema: Strawberry Roan (1944), Waltz Time (1945), Spring Song/Springtime/Swing Jamboree (1946), Green Fingers (1947) and While I Live (1947). She married (second) a veterinarian and moved to Australia with him in 1953, embarking on a new career there, as the star of her own TV show, and a few more films, including No Rain at Timburi (1954), The Journalist (1979) and Relatives (1984). Awarded the Order of Australia the week before her death at 99. Her husband died in 2016.
