Cherubic child star, with brown, curly hair, born Dennis Michael Sheffield, his career in silents ending in 1927. He found later jobs unsatisfactory and, after war service, went back to Hollywood, initially in the props department, then as an assistant director (from 1947), progressing to second unit director by the late 1950s, and directing action scenes for some of the film capital's best-known movies, including Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957), The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Patton (1970), The Yakuza (1974), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Never Say Never Again (1983), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Outrageous Fortune (1987), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Three Musketeers (1993), 101 Dalmatians (1996), Wrongfully Accused (1998) and 102 Dalmatians (2000), his last. His films as an actor included The Poor Little Rich Girl (1917), For Better, For Worse (1919), Manslaughter (1922), Cytherea (1924) and The King of Kings (1927). A lifetime fitness fanatic, he swam 40 laps of an Olympic-sized pool every day until he was 95. He died from congestive heart failure.
