Elliott Reid

Actor

Born - 16 January 1920, New York City, USA
Died - 21 June 2013

Tall, dark, blue-eyed, docile-looking leading man and later character actor, most prominent at Fox in the 1950s when he proved a wryly useful sounding board for such high-powered leading ladies as Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, Jean Peters and Jeanne Crain. Born Edgeworth Reid, he began acting as a child on children's radio programmes and made his Broadway debut at 17, becoming a member of Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre company. Films followed: The Ramparts We Watch (1940), Young Ideas (1943), The Story of Dr Wassell (1944), A Double Life (1946), Sierra (1950), The Whip Hand (1951), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Vicki (1953), Woman's World (1954), Inherit the Wind (1960), The Absent-minded Professor (1961), The Thrill of It All (1963), The Wheeler Dealers (1963), Move Over, Darling (1963), Follow Me, Boys! (1966), Some Kind of Nut (1969), Heaven Can Wait (1978) and Young Einstein (1988), his last. In later times, he also made a name for himself as a gifted political satirist. He died from heart failure.
