Narrow-eyed, cruel-looking, crisply-spoken American actor who made his Broadway debut at 19, but became typed with his first film role, the Roman emperor Caligula, in The Robe (1953) and its sequel, Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954). He never again had such an eye-catching assignment and his career was disrupted when he was jailed for 15 months on narcotic charges in the late 1950s. Other film appearances included those in The Virgin Queen (1955), The Wild Party (1956), My Man Godfrey (1957), Tell Me in the Sunlight (1965), Bunny O'Hare (1971), Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* *But Were Afraid to Ask (1972), This is a Hijack (1973), Nightmare Honeymoon (1974), Shampoo (1975), Train Ride to Hollywood (1976), Born Again (1978), The Man with Bogart's Face (1980), Partners (1981), The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982), The Malibu Bikini Shop (1986), Transylvania Twist (1989), Dracula (1992), Skeeter (1993) and the TV movie Murder Between Friends (1994), his last. He was twice wed: his first wife died in 2002 after 42 years of marriage.
