Peter Graves

Actor

Born - 18 March 1925, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
Died - 14 March 2010

Fair-haired, strong-jawed, square-shouldered actor, now best remembered for his star role in the TV series Mission: Impossible (1958-60), even though there were only 35 episodes in the entire run. But Graves was also leading man, or top support in a whole slew of 1950s' films before the iconic move to TV. Later, he guyed his own he-man image in the Airplane! spoofs. Born Peter Aurness, the younger brother of actor James Arness (and marrying a girl called Joan Endress!), Graves was briefly seen as a 17-year-old bombardier in John Huston's wartime short, Winning Your Wings. He made his major film debut in one of the two leading roles of 1950's Rogue River. Films that followed included Fort Defiance (1951), Red Planet Mars (1952), a rare but memorable villain in Stalag 17 (1953), The Raid (1954), The Night of the Hunter (1955), It Conquered the World (1956), A Stranger in My Arms (1959), then much TV before and after A Rage to Live (1965), The Ballad of Josie (1967), Airplane! (1980, and its 1982 sequel), Addams Family Values (1993) and Looney Tunes: Back in Action, (2003), his last. He died from a heart attack shortly after enjoying a family meal out to celebrate his upcoming 85th birthday.
