I'm Not in Love

5/10

Stars: Al Weaver, Cristina Catalina, Tessa Peake-Jones, Morgan Watkins, Sinead Matthews, John Henshaw, Gabrielle Creevy

Director: Col Spector

A mild little sort-of-romcom that's not actually that romantic or funny. Its characters all seem permanently depressed, although none of them is quite as confused, hesitant or suffers from an inferiority complex as big as that hanging over Rob (Weaver), a nutritionist living with a Romanian woman, Marta (Catalina) in her late thirties. Rob is vaguely dissatisfied with the relationship and uncertain of his feelings. Marta wants permanency and a baby, and not surprisingly the two are soon at each other's throats.

After a series of tentative experiences with other women, Rob, who himself is in his mid thirties, decides to offer Marta 'what I owe her'. Does anyone handle a proposal as badly as Rob subsequently does? The ending implies that they will get back together and all will be well. Some hope, on the evidence shown here.

Full of awkward pauses and jarring moments - baristas who swear at you? - the film, although nicely shot and decently performed, never quite hits the mark - or our emotions.
