Jon Whiteley

Child actor

Born - 19 February 1945, Monymusk, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Died - 19 May 2020

Scottish-born child actor with a mop of fair, wavy hair (even in old age the mop, now grey, remained). A verse competition winner at six, he was awarded a special Oscar at eight for his performance in The Kidnappers (1953). Other credits as a child included Hunted/The Stranger in Between (1952), Moonfleet (1955), The Weapon (1956) and The Spanish Gardener (1956), two of these opposite Dirk Bogarde, who described him as 'the most frighteningly talented child I've ever seen'. Following the completion of schooling, however, he had a brief foray into adult acting, involving some TV and one film, The Cape Town Affair (1967), before opting for a life in academia, becoming an art historian and longtime curator of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. His wife Linda, also an academic, survives him.
