Light-haired, thin-lipped, narrow-eyed, stocky American supporting actor, often cast as criminals. On TV from the mid 1950s, he made a couple of early films, but the main body of his movie career didn't get going until the early 1970s: Never Love a Stranger (1958), Odds Against Tomorrow (1959), Lions Love (1969), The Panic in Needle Park (1971), The Godfather (1972, as Al Neri), The Getaway (1972), Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), The Sugarland Express (1974), The Godfather: Part II (1974), Rancho Deluxe (1975), Marathon Man (1976), Looking for Mr Goodbar (1977), On the Yard (1978), Hair (1979), The Idolmaker (1980), Two of a Kind (1983), Once Upon a Time in America (1984), Crimewave (1985), Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986), The Verne Miller Story (1987), Red Heat (1988), The Godfather: Part III (1990), Who's the Man? (1993), Who Do I Gotta Kill? (1994), Night Falls on Manhattan (1996), Joe the King (1999), Trigger Happy (2001) and Day on Fire (2006), his last. Bright, whose third wife was actress Rutanya Alda (she survives him), was struck and killed by a bus in his native New York City.
