Carrie Fisher

Actress/writer

Born - 21 October 1956, Los Angeles, California, USA
Died - 27 December 2016

Small, dark-haired American actress and writer, the daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher. A forceful actress from her first appearance in Shampoo (1975), her success as Princess Leia in Star Wars (1977) made her an iconic figure but one difficult to cast, and her remaining film roles don't linger in the mind. Married and divorced from singer Paul Simon, her battles with drugs and alcohol were well documented - but she later proved a wrily witty and observant writer, penning several novels and the semi- autobiographical Postcards from the Edge: it was filmed in 1990, with Fisher writing the screenplay. Subsequently, she came into demand as a script doctor, reworking scripts for a number of films. Other film work includes Mr Mike's Mondo Video (1979), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), The Blues Brothers (1980), Under the Rainbow (1981), Return of the Jedi (1983), The Man With the One Red Shoe (1985), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Appointment with Death (1988), The 'burbs (1989), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Drop Dead Fred (1991), So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993), Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), Scream 3 (2000), Wonderland (2003), Undiscovered (2005), Cougar Club (2007), White Lightnin' (2009), Maps to the Stars (2014), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and the documentary Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds (2016). She had completed work on the eighth episode of the Star Wars series, to be shown in 2017. She died from cardiac arrest, one day before the death of her mother.
