Burly, balding, sometimes fiercely bearded Italian actor most prominent in the films of the Taviani brothers, especially Padre Padrone. He was also kept busy dubbing the voice of horror star Christopher Lee into Italian on many films, including the JRR Tolkien adaptations by Peter Jackson. After stage experience, he moved gradually into a film career by early middle age: Holiday in St Tropez (1964), Schwarzer Markt der Liebe (1966), The Kidnap of Mary Lou (1974), The Sunday Woman (1975), Padre Padrone (1977), Alexander the Great (1980), Grog (1982), El Sur (1983), Golfo de Vizcaya (1985), Good Morning Babylon (1987), El Dorado (1988), Solitude (1991), Farinelli (1993), The Border (1996), You Laugh (1998), Tierra del Fuego (2000), The Bankers of God: The Calvi Affair (2002), Io e Napoleone (2006), Miracle at St Anna (2008), Piazza Fontana: The Italian Conspiracy (2012), Pecore in Erba (2015) and Hammamet (2020), his last. He died from cancer.
