Fair-haired, bespectacled American cinematographer of ruddy complexion, twice Oscar-nominated for his achievements in Raging Bull (1980) and The Fugitive (1993). He had begun his career behind the scenes as a camera operator in his late twenties - first credit on Who Killed Teddy Bear in 1965. As director of photography, his work includes The Last Detail (1973), Jaws (1975), Taxi Driver (1976), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982), The Man With Two Brains (1983), The Lost Boys (1987), Scrooged (1988), Ghostbusters II (1989), Kindergarten Cop (1990), Doc Hollywood (1991), Rising Sun (1993), Primal Fear (1996), The Story of Us (1999), Evolution (2001), Eulogy (2004), Hoot (2006) and Bridge to Tarabithia (2007), his last. He also provided acting cameos in numerous movies from The Last Detail to Suspect Zero (2004), and directed the films All the Right Moves (1983), The Clan of the Cave Bear (1986) and The Viking Sagas (1995). Married to writer/producer Amy Holden Jones, who survives him, he died from heart failure.
