Wry-faced, brown-haired English actor, on stage at 22 after RADA studies, and throughout his career a man of the stage rather than any other medium. TV viewers saw him first in the feature-length drama Mrs Dot (1950), and there were a few films, sometimes in leading roles: Oscar Wilde (1960, as Bosey), Mr Topaze (1961), Billy Budd, (1962), Unearthly Stranger (1964), A Study in Terror/Fog (1965, as Sherlock Holmes) and The Adventures of Gerard (1970). He emigrated to Canada in 1972, and became a stalwart of the theatre there. Later films included the lead in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1983), The Road to Wellville (1994), Swann (1996), Regeneration (1997), Urban Legend (1998), Sunshine (1999), Crime and Punishment (2002), Spider (2002), Separate Lies (2005) and the short Bradfordian Rain (2010), his last. Married to his wife Caroline for more than 60 years, he had six children. He died from Alzheimer's disease.
