Betty Garrett

Actress-singer-dancer

Born - 23 May 1919, St Joseph, Missouri, USA
Died - 12 February 2011

Winningly energetic brunette musical comedy star with delightfully wry sense of humour whose Hollywood career was stopped in its tracks by the Communist witch-hunt of the late 1940s, having married the similarly blacklisted Larry Parks in 1944. After Broadway successes, MGM wooed her to come to Hollywood, and she made Words and Music (1948), The Big City (1948), Take Me Out to the Ball Game/Everybody's Cheering (1948), Neptune's Daughter (1949) and the groundbreaking On the Town (1949, as Frank Sinatra's taxi-driver love interest). She emerged from blacklisting in the 1950s to make My Sister Eileen (1955) and Shadow on the Window (1957) but, preferring not to play mother roles, her time was much taken up afterwards by TV (Laverne & Shirley, All in the Family) and with touring night clubs with her husband, who died in 1975. Later, she toured with a one-woman show, and made a couple of appearances in minor horror films, Trail of the Screaming Forehead (2006) and Dark and Stormy Night (2009), her last. She died from an aortic aneurysm.
