Fair-haired, moustachioed English comedy actor with military voice and lecherous laugh. In show business from childhood, but not especially well-known in films until he brought his successful interpretation of a sheep in wolf's clothing (nurtured in radio's hit series The Navy Lark) to the screen in the late 1950s. He enjoyed a popular run of star comedy parts from then on. Films include Lassie from Lancashire (1936, but not shown until 1938), The Citadel (1938), The Four Feathers (1939), The Thief of Bagdad (1940), Rhythm Serenade (1943), The Magic Bow (1946), Anna Karenina (1948), Train of Events (1949), The Woman With No Name (1950), Pool of London (1951), The Sound Barrier (1952), The Limping Man (1953), Value for Money (1955), Brothers in Law (1956), The Smallest Show on Earth (1957), a first starring role in The Man Who Liked Funerals (1958), Carry On Nurse (1959), The Navy Lark (1959), Carry On Constable (1960), Doctor in Love (1960), Raising the Wind (1961), In the Doghouse (1961), Crooks Anonymous (1962), Father Came Too (1963), You Must Be Joking! (1965), Doctor in Clover (1966), Doctor in Trouble (1970), Not Now, Darling (1972), Spanish Fly (1975), Not Now, Comrade (1976), Out of Africa (1985), Empire of the Sun (1987), Scandal (1988), King Ralph (1990), Carry On Columbus (1992), August (1996), The Jackal (1997), Mad Cows (1999), Saving Grace (2000), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), Thunderpants (2002), Collusion (2003), Venus (2006), Is Anybody There? (2008), Late Bloomers (2011), After Death (2012) and Darkheart Manor (2023), his last. He was also the voice of the Sorting Hat in several 'Harry Potter' films. Survived by four children from his 17-year marriage to actress Penelope Bartley. His second marriage, to actress Angela Scoular, ended after 29 years when she committed suicide. He remarried in 2013.
