Grizzled, chain-smoking, ace French cinematographer. At the forefront of his country's 'nouvelle vague' films in the 1960s, the prodigious Coutard shot more than two films a year over a 43-year period. His seminal work includes The Devil's Pass (1958), Breathless/A Bout de Souffle (1959), Tirez sur le Pianiste/Don't Shoot the Piano Player (1960), Jules et Jim (1961), Le Petit Soldat (1963), Le Mepris/Contempt (1963), Bande a Part (1964), La Femme Mariee (1964), Alphaville (1965), Pierrot le Fou (1965), The Defector (1966), The Bride Wore Black (1968), The Southern Star (1969), Z (1969) and many more. His last credit was on Wild Innocence in 2001.
