Hefty, balding, scrape-voiced, usually moustachioed American actor, often seen as characters who started to sweat when under pressure. He was in Broadway plays at 26, but proved to be at his best in film character roles, which began in earnest in 1985 and included several key appearances in films by the Coen brothers. Also prominent in early episodes of the cult TV series Homicide: Life on the Street, he made his film debut in The Clairvoyant (1982). Later credits include Compromising Positions (1985), Highlander (1986), Critical Condition (1987), Homeboy (1988), Miller's Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991), The Rocketeer (1991), The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), The Crow (1994), Fluke (1995), The Big Lebowski (1998), Angel's Dance (1999), Stuart Little (1999), The Man Who Wasn't There (2001), The Singing Detective (2003), The Honeymooners (2005), American Gangster (2007), Stiffs (2010), Gangster Squad (2013), Locker 13 (2014) and The Maestro (2017), his last. He died from cancer (melanoma).
