Johnny Briggs

Actor

Born - 5 September 1935, Battersea, London, England
Died - 28 February 2021

London-born actor with light, tufty hair, twinkling eyes and slightly shifty charm. Following training at the Italia Conti stage school, he was in films as a boy, but, after achieving prominence as teenage tearaways, regressed to supporting roles and, in the 1970s, cameos in bawdy comedies. TV gave him better stuff, culminating in his signature role from 1974 as Mike Baldwin in the long-running soap series Coronation Street, a role he played for more than 30 years, until his character was killed off in 2006. Following a movie debut as a street urchin Hue and Cry (1947), he was seen in Quartet (1948), Helter Skelter (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), Second Fiddle (1957), Diplomatic Corpse (1958), Sink the Bismarck! (1960), The Wind of Change (1961), The Wild and the Willing (1962), HMS Defiant (1962), Doctor in Distress (1963), The Leather Boys (1964), 633 Squadron (1964), The Intelligence Men (1965), Carry On Up the Khyber (1968), Some Girls Do (1969), Perfect Friday (1970), Au Pair Girls (1972), Naughty Wives (1973), The Best Pair of Legs in the Business (1973), Bedtime With Rosie (1975), Office Party (1976), his last, and many more. He died 'after a long illness'.
