William Asher

Director

Born - 8 August 1921, New York
Died - 16 July 2012

Burly, balding writer, producer and director with an eye for successful light entertainment, both in films and TV. 'Bill' Asher directed 100 episodes of the phenomenally successful TV comedy series I Love Lucy between 1952 and 1957, and was also associated with Bewitched, which starred the second of his four wives, Elizabeth Montgomery. On the film front, he co-wrote and co-directed a boxing picture for Columbia, Leather Gloves/Loser Take All in 1948. Three episodes of his TV series Racket Squad were released to cinemas as a feature film, Mobs Inc in 1956, but his cinema career proper began with The Shadow on the Window and The 27th Day the following year. After more TV work, he found a winning film formula with his beach movies, plus the occasional relapse into gangsterdom: Beach Party (1963), Muscle Beach Party (1964), Johnny Cool (1964), Bikini Beach (1964), Beach Blanket Bingo (1965), On the Run (1965, for TV), How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965) and Fireball 500 (1966), before returning to TV work. Later films include The Evil Protege (1982), Movers & Shakers (1985) and the TV movie Return to Green Acres (1990), his last. He died from Alzheimer's complications.
