Blond, youthful-looking, flop-haired, not-too-tall Scots-born actor, the son of a distinguished violinist who opted for an acting career and appeared in featured roles in British films for seven years before going to America and becoming a national figure with his portrayal of Russian agent Illya Kuryakin in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. TV series. Spent the last 20 years of his long life playing Dr 'Ducky' Mallard in the popular N.C.I.S. series. Films include Ill Met by Moonlight (1956), Hell Drivers (1957), Robbery Under Arms (1957), A Night to Remember (1958), The Long and the Short and the Tall (1960), Jungle Street (1961), Billy Budd (1962), The Great Escape (1963), To Trap a Spy (1964), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), Three Bites of the Apple (1966), The Karate Killers (1967), The Heroin Gang/Sol Madrid (1967), Mosquito Squadron (1968), The Ravine (1969), Frankenstein: The True Story (1973), The Diamond Hunters (1975), Dogs (1976), King Solomon's Treasure (1978), The Watcher in the Woods (1981), Critical List (1982), Terminal Choice (1985), The Wind (1987), Hear My Song (1991), Dirty Weekend (1992), Shattered Image (1993), Healer (1994) and Cherry (1999), his last. His marriage to actress Jill Ireland ended after 10 years and he is survived by Katherine, his second wife of 56 years, and five children.
