Solidly-built, bespectacled Czech film director whose parents both died in wartime concentration camps. After film studies, he began directing in 1960, but fled to America after the crushing of the Prague Spring rebellion by the Soviets in 1968. In Hollywood, he won two Oscars for his work on One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and Amadeus (1984). His films, which often showcase doomed, isolated or bewildered protagonists, also include Magic Lantern (1958), Magic Lantern II (1960), Peter and Pavla (1964), A Blonde in Love (1965), The Fireman's Ball (1967), Taking Off (1971), Hair (1979), Ragtime (1981), Valmont (1989), The People vs Larry Flynt (1996), Man on the Moon (1999), Goya's Ghosts (2006) and A Walk Worthwhile (2009), his last.
