Mary Carlisle

Actress/singer

Born - 3 February 1912, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Died - 1 August 2018

Dresden china-type Hollywood leading lady of the early sound years, a healthy-looking blue-eyed blonde who sang, danced, co-starred with Bing Crosby in some of his earlier musicals and lived to the ripe old age of 106 (some sources say 104). Born Gwendolyn Witter, she was in films as a child - Long Live the King (1923) - and, using her grandmother's maiden name, moved into adult roles from 1930: Madam Satan (1930), Children of Pleasure (1930), The Secret 6 (1931), The Great Lover (1931), This Reckless Age (1932), Grand Hotel (1932), College Humor (1933), Saturday's Millions (1933), This Side of Heaven (1934), Million Dollar Ransom (1934), It's in the Air (1935), Kind Lady/House of Menace (1935), Love in Exile (1936), Lady Be Careful (1936), Hotel Haywire (1937), Hold 'Em Navy (1937), Hunted Men (1938), Doctor Rhythm (1938), Hawaiian Nights (1939), Beware Spooks! (1939), Dance, Girl, Dance (1940), Rags to Riches (1941) and Baby Face Morgan (1942). She married in 1942 and, after one last appearance, in a Z-grade horror movie, Dead Men Walk (1943), she perhaps understandably retired from films. Later, she ran an LA beauty salon. Her husband died in 2007.
