Died - 15 January 2018

Lean, shaggy-haired, charismatic, often moustachioed, French-born British actor who rose to fame on TV as Jason King in the popular Department S series. Born Cyril Goldbert and the son of a diplomat, he was interned with his family in a Japanese prison camp before beginning a stage career in England, where he also played a number of small film roles, including one in Dick Barton Strikes Back (1949) and another in Alexander the Great (1956). After stage successes, he returned to the screen in leading roles in The Innocents (1961) and Night of the Eagle (1962). He made no more films until Jason King made him a national figure. Later movies include The Dream Ship (1978), Flash Gordon (1980) and Tank Malling (1989), his last. A bisexual, he was married to and divorced from actress Dorinda Stevens, also living for some while with fellow-actor Alan Bates.
