British director of second-features in the 1950s - often compilation films that featured more than one story: Calling Scotland Yard (1953), Gilbert Harding Speaking of Murder (1953), Star of My Night (1953), A Tale of Three Women (1954), Fatal Journey (1954), Count of Twelve (1955), The Mysterious Bullet (1955), Satellite in the Sky (1956, his biggest film and the only one in colour) and The Depraved (1957). Dickson, born Alan Paul Dickson, had made an auspicious start to his career with the documentaries The Undefeated (1949) and David (1951). After a period in the late 1960s directing episodes of such TV series as The Avengers and Department S, he returned to the documentary field, later becoming head of direction at the National Film School until his retirement in 1990.
