Eleanor Parker

Actress

Born - 26 June 1922, Cedarville, Ohio, USA
Died - 9 December 2013

Graceful, warmly upper-bracket American actress with full features and red-gold hair, often seen as passive beauties, but at her best as troubled, strong-willed or dominant women. Her fight for these roles resulted in three Oscar nominations. She made her Hollywood debut at 19 in They Died with Their Boots On (1941), but her role ended up on the cutting-room floor, and she was mostly seen in 'B' features for the next few years: Busses Roar (1942), The Mysterious Doctor (1943), Crime by Night (1944), The Last Ride (1944). From the mid 1940s, she became an 'A' list star for 12 years: Pride of the Marines (1945), Never Say Goodbye (1946), Escape Me Never (1947), The Woman in White (1948), Caged (1950), Detective Story (1951), Scaramouche (1952), The Naked Jungle (1954), Interrupted Melody (1955), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and Lizzie (1957). Her star career declined after that: A Hole in the Head (1959), Home from the Hill (1960), Return to Peyton Place (1961), Madison Avenue (1962), Panic Button (1964), The Sound of Music (1965), See You in Hell, Darling (1966), Warning Shot (1967), Eye of the Cat (1969) and Sunburn (1979), her last. Four times married (although wed 35 years to her last husband), she died from pneumonia.
