James Shigeta

Actor

Born - 17 June 1929, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
Died - 28 July 2014

Handsome Hawaiian-born actor, the first of Asian heritage to attract leading roles in Hollywood for many decades, and some time before such action stars as Bruce Lee came to prominence. Originally a singer, Shigeta had a leading role in his first film, Samuel Fuller's thriller The Crimson Kimono (1959). For a while he was popular fan fodder: Walk Like a Dragon (1960), Bridge to the Sun (1961), Cry for Happy (1961) and especially the musical Flower Drum Song (1961), before subsiding into featured roles: Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966), Nobody's Perfect (1968), Lost Horizon (1973), The Yakuza (1974), Midway (1976), then much TV until Die Hard (1988), Cage (1989), China Cry (1990), Midnight Man (1995), Drive (1997), Brother (2000), Ribbon of Dreams (2002) and The People I've Slept With (2009), his last. He died from pulmonary failure.
