Dusky, raven-haired, exotic-looking actress of Mexican parentage who co-starred with Clark Gable in the 1935 Mutiny on the Bounty and, in an ironic twist, later married Marlon Brando, star of the 1962 remake. Born Maria Castenada, she was in films as a child, beginning with El Dios del Mar (1930). She came to Hollywood three years after, as a dancer in Flying Down to Rio. After Bounty, she remained in Hollywood, playing mainly Mexican or Polynesian maidens: Captain Calamity (1936), Paradise Isle (1937), The Hurricane (1937), Rose of the Rio Grande (1938), Girl from Rio (1939), Wolf Call (1939) and (in Britain) The Tower of Terror (1941). After a break for marriage and children with Irish boxer/singer Jack Doyle, she returned, largely in character roles: Fort Apache (1948), Red Light (1949), Wagonmaster (1950), The Furies (1950), Soldiers Three (1951), Wild Horse Ambush (1952), Dream Wife (1953), Ride, Vaquero! (1954) and Apache Ambush (1955). She and Brando divorced in 1962 and, much later, she was seen in the TV movie Panic in Echo Park (1977) and had a running role in the late 1980s TV series Knots Landing. She died after sustaining a neck injury and is survived by an older sister!
