Fair-haired American filmmaker who moved from stand-up comedy (often in harness with Elaine May) to directing some of Hollywood's most beguiling entertainments of the past 50 years, notably Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), The Graduate (1967), Catch-22 (1970), The Day of the Dolphin (1973), The Fortune (1975), Silkwood (1983), Heartburn (1986), Working Girl (1988), Postcards from the Edge (1990), Regarding Henry (1991), The Birdcage (1996), Primary Colors(1998), Closer (2004) and Charlie Wilson's War (2007), his last. Born Michael Peschkowsky, and four times married (latterly to writer Diane Sawyer), he died suddenly from a heart attack. He won the best director Oscar for The Graduate.
